Some fish come easy.
Some fish make you work for it.
And some fish — like the Pacific Sheephead — seem to spend years dodging your hook… until the day everything finally lines up.
On this trip I launched the Sea-Doo Fish Pro with a simple plan: explore La Jolla, California on the SeaDoo, work the edges of the kelp, and see what was willing to bite. Sheephead are famous for hanging around rock piles, reefs, and kelp beds along the Southern California coast, but they’re also famous for stealing bait and disappearing before you can even set the hook.
If you’ve ever targeted sheephead, you know the drill.
Tap… tap… nothing.
Bait gone.
Tap… tap… swing and miss.
They’re basically the professional bait thieves of the reef.
But this time the bite stuck.
After a few casts working structure, I felt the classic sheephead bite — a couple quick taps followed by a solid pull. The rod loaded up and the fight was on. A few moments later, a beautiful Pacific Sheephead came up alongside the Sea-Doo, and just like that… the streak was broken.

Mission accomplished.
Sheephead are one of the most unique fish in California saltwater fishing. Between their crazy human-like teeth, bold red-and-black coloring, and stubborn fights, they’re a favorite target for anglers fishing reefs and kelp from boats, kayaks, and even the shoreline.
And landing one from a personal watercraft fishing setup makes the whole experience even better.
That’s one of the things I love about fishing from the Sea-Doo — you can reach structure, explore coastline, and chase fish in a way that feels more like an adventure than just another day on the water.
No matter what bites, every trip tells a story.
This time… the story involved a first-ever Pacific Sheephead.
